The Rockefeller Foundation supports innovative proof-of-concept electrification projects such as mini-grids, where they seek to establish sector standards and platforms for knowledge sharing.
As Tara’s inaugural and primary partner, the Foundation provided INR 140 million over three years, with continued support forT Tara’s technology and social impact programmes.
Thirty mini-grid projects have been commissioned, exploring sustainability of various business models and creating verifiable conditions for scale-up.
Tara’s micro-enterprise development programme mobilises village-level entrepreneurs to drive local economic growth and stimulate productive use of electricity.
Smart Power India provided core support in developing context-appropriate business models, facilitating relationships with equipment vendors, tracking performance of micro-enterprises, and supplying INR 3.2 million of working capital.
Sixty-seven enterprises were established through this project, averaging 21kWh of monthly consumption. Hundreds of employment opportunities created.
The project focussed on the functional and financial literacy to women in Kachhauna Block, Uttar Pradesh, and encouraged discussion of health and hygiene practices.
HCL’s experience in formulating education programmes and impact evaluation studies was invaluable for this collaboration, and paired well with Tara Urja’s expertise in on-ground execution.
1,556 women learners improved their literacy skills and their confidence. Awareness about the importance of literacy rose among more than 8,000 members of the local community.
Solar energy and irrigation was brought to villages in Jhansi district, UP, with the aim to expand school facilities, improve household living conditions, and enhance income opportunities for local farmers.
Siting research, equipment procurement and installation, and community engagement were all joint collaborations between the Foundation and Tara Urja.
The project saw construction of 20 solar pico-grids, serving 492 households. Installation of six solar irrigation pumps, serving 43 farmers on 86 acres of land.
Promoting sustainable energy as a poverty reduction tool and a harbinger of socio-economic advancement in remote rural areas, the project coordinated tools and trainings for village energy committees to manage local biomass plants.
Up to INR 120 million was provided for Tara to develop local operations and management service models, and to engage local communities is running and maintaining energy assets.
The project led to successful creation of community-based model for management of renewable energy projects; improved availability of power in turn enhanced the socio-economic wellbeing.
Tara Urja’s Integrated Energy & Revenue Management System expands capabilities for monitoring and updating electricity connections, and automating core customer management functions.
Funding from FICCI’s Millennium Award enabled the next iteration of software and hardware components, culminating in a pilot for 600 households.
The pilot has impacted 3,000 lives, and has enhanced the efficiency of plant operations and revenue management, cutting costs and improving customer service experience
This partnership with the Signify (Philips) Foundation provided high-quality lighting for households and public spaces at rural mini-grid sites across Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand.
The Signify Foundation brought a suite of lighting solutions, as well as the expertise on distribution and installation necessary for maximum impact.
In combination with its other mini-grid initiatives Signify expects to distribute at least 100,000 lights to households and install streetlights in over 80 villages.
