Our Impact

Reliable electricity can transform people’s lives. Shopkeepers can keep their shops open longer and earn more. Entrepreneurs can set up new micro-enterprises to benefit the local economy. Critical local institutions such as banks, schools and health clinics are able to provide better services. Through these entities, communities have access to better choices and opportunities at their doorstep, including, safe drinking water, safe cooking fuel and faster connectivity. With electricity, families can do daily chores easily after sunset, avoid use of harmful kerosene lamps and with improved earnings add a fan and TV to improve their lives.

We believe that’s what rural development is all about. That’s why we are using solar energy based mini-grids for rural electrification in India: because we believe electricity is an accelerator for economic growth and the mini-grid energy service model at the local level is an effective way to drive economic development of local communities.

The local impact of our projects---both economic and social---drive Tara Urja's vision and mission. In partnership with Sambodhi, we strove to quantify some of the benefits we bring to the communities we serve, and use these learnings to provide further insight into the needs of our customers.

My grandfather, father and uncles are all farmers. After finishing my studies, I would have become a farmer too, because I didn’t have a choice. But Tara Urja’s electricity supply made many more things possible. I now have a small printing shop, where I design and print invitation cards. I’m an earning member of my family, now!

We help run the shop when we are not at school. Before we got a Tara Urja connection for the shop, we had no choice but to use generators for electricity for a few hours. But now, our shop always has light, even when other shops are in darkness. This helps us attract customers and do more business. Our parents are proud that we are helping them earn money. And we are proud we are helping pay for our education.
